Montréal shoppers are spoiled rotten—they have some of the best boutiques on the planet, and when street-level options don’t suffice, there’s always a deal to be found down below in la ville souterraine. With over 30 km of tunnels spread over a 12 km area, this subterranean network is the largest underground complex in the world. Some 500,000 people pass through its winding corridors every day on their way to work, school, or in search of that perfect something from any one of the 1,500+ stores along the way. A recommended jumping-off point is Les Cours Mont-Royal (1455 Peel Street, Peel Métro), where you’ll find both bargain and high-end wear for men and women (Harry Rosen for the guys, DKNY for the ladies). As you walk east, the Scotiabank Cinema (977 Sainte-Catherine Street West) is just an escalator ride away, but if it’s bargains you seek then keep going until you hit the Eaton Centre (705 Sainte-Catherine Street West) and its 175 boutiques. Les Promenades Cathédrale (625 Sainte-Catherine Street West) is your next stop, followed by The Bay (585 Sainte-Catherine Street West), and finally, Complexe Desjardins (150 Sainte-Catherine Street West). Just across (or under) the street is the cultural hub of downtown, Place des Arts (175 Sainte-Catherine Street West). All in all, a great way to spend the day indoors.
